A Call For Ideas

Sara and I have recently been chosen to participate in this year's Youth Conference for church. This will be our 3rd year doing this. I really like it, because I get to bond with some of the youth, and perhaps it helps me feel a little bit younger. For those of you unfamiliar with Youth Conference, it is where the youth of our church from around our area get together for a weekend of games, competition, service, and strengthening of beliefs. It is also a chance for the youth to get to know each other better. For our Youth Conference the youth are divided up into groups called families. Each family consists of parents (a young man and a young woman who are usually seniors in high school), grandparents (a slightly older couple to help supervise, i.e. Sara and I), and children (some other youth). Every year has a different theme. This year's theme is "Life is a Screen Test". Each family had to choose a name based on something to do with movies. They then have to perform a skit at the end of the weekend, decorate their table/room and generally act in accordance to their family name. This will all take place from April 17th to the 20th. The reason I am asking for help is because our parents chose Musicals.

I spend a lot of time explaining why I am not gay, even though some of my behavior would lead you to conclude the contrary (i.e. my newfound love of Dawson's Creek. I'll save that for another post). However, I have never developed a love of musicals. This is where you come in. I know that there are a few of you who read this that have a lot more expertise in this area than I do. I am asking for suggestions for things we can do. Skit ideas, table decorations, T-shirt designs, songs, and anything else you think would be good. Remember that these must be movie musicals and not stage musicals. Ideally, I would like to film our skit before next weekend and then just play it for everyone, but tax season and my complete incompetence on how to actually do that may dictate otherwise. We have a total of 13 people in our family(including Sara and I), and have a $100 budget.

Thank you in advance for anything you suggest.

On a side note, the Mr. Sasquatch Competition is coming to a close. Voting ends on Friday. I don't know what would keep anyone from voting. It is almost like something people are born with. Just like fingers and toes, everyone is born with a duty to vote for Mr. Sasquatch. So instead of not utilizing that talent you have been given, click on this link and cast your votes!

Yo.

Okay, so here's what you do:

You pick the most well known movie musicals for the kids. That's probably going to be Hairspray, Chicago, maybe Rent (depending on how uptight your ward is not) and Phantom of the opera and maybe West Side Story. (ahh.. it's timeless) You better think about throwing Grease in there too. You have the option of using Across the Universe or Moulin Rouge... but those probably wont' play as well.

The skit can be a hilarious compilation of different characters from these very diverse musicals (a phantom, a puerto Rican gang member, a girl from the 60's with big hair, a poodle skirt chick, a flapper girl, a drag queen (okay, i get it... you're probably not using Rent) and you have them each battling out which is superior etc... It reminds me of a funny SNL skit where Celene Dion would constantly outsing every other "diva." No one has to sing. They can just "act" and have a funny little skit or story.

The table decorations can still be "names in lights' broadway style silverscreen stuff etc. Music notes.. whatever. Or it can be specific to the different themes of the movies.

If the kids chose musicals, they probably already have a good idea of what music they like from the shows, and any t-shirt ideas depecting them. (they also all have crushes on Zac Efron. yes, even the boys.)

Hope that's helpful!
